What Is Upper Blepharoplasty?

Commonly called upper eyelid surgery, upper blepharoplasty is a procedure that aims to address cosmetic concerns with one or both upper eyelids. Typically, these concerns are related to signs of aging, but this is not the limit. Whether age, genetics, or other factors have led to concerns about your eyelid appearance, then we have a blepharoplasty procedure that can address them.

For upper blepharoplasty, some of the core issues it can address include:

  • Excess eyelid skin
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Droopy upper eyelid
  • Asymmetry between the eyelids
  • Tired, fatigued appearance
  • And more

Key Benefits

To get the most out of any procedure, the most important factor is to work with the right surgeon. At Nevada Eye Plastic Surgery, every procedure is performed by board-certified surgeon Dr. Marcus J Ko, who completed his medical degree at the prestigious Harvard Medical School.
When working with the right surgeon, some benefits of upper blepharoplasty for patients can include:
  • Long-lasting results
  • A refreshed, youthful appearance
  • Improved facial balance and symmetry
  • Hidden incisions for no visible scarring
  • Personalized procedure plans

Overview of a Typical Procedure

Every blepharoplasty procedure by Dr. Ko is tailored to the patient’s needs, with adaptations to elements and techniques as needed. The aim is to create a procedure that aligns with patient goals to deliver a safe, pleasing experience. However, the general outline of procedures can remain quite similar.

First, patients will receive an anesthetic. While general anesthesia is common for complete comfort, local numbing may be enough in some cases. Dr. Ko will go over your options during the consultation to help you decide. Once you are comfortable, we will move precisely through your procedure plan. This includes creating incisions, removing excess skin, and repositioning tissues. Once everything is complete, he closes the incisions, and you are taken to a comfortable room to rest for a time. Patients can expect about 2 hours for the entire process. However, this can vary if you are combining procedures. Once you are rested, you can return home with someone to drive you.

How Does Dr. Ko Personalize Surgery?

Successful blepharoplasty does not follow a one-size-fits-all approach. Rather, each element must be adapted to the patient’s individual needs and unique anatomy. This is part of why having a board-certified oculofacial surgeon is essential to seeing optimal results. Such surgeons, like Dr. Ko, have spent years specializing in this individual field. They understand the fragile and complex structures of the eyelid, allowing them to produce more refined results.
This extensive knowledge allows for adaptive techniques and effective combination procedures. For example, patients may combine eyelid surgery with a brow lift. However, making the procedure results balance with each other requires an in-depth understanding of the face’s structures. Popular procedures to combine with upper blepharoplasty include:

The core advantages of combining procedures are twofold. First, you can see enhanced results. Second, you can avoid splitting your procedure in two, which would require two separate recovery periods.

Recovery Timeline

Working with a skilled surgeon can minimize the amount of time spent in recovery. An experienced surgeon will be able to more with less, resulting in less damage that needs healing. However, there is still a process for healing after surgery, which is broken into a few stages.
Weeks 1–2: During the first week or two, patients will need to take downtime away from work and all strenuous activity. Focus on resting and following your post-procedure instructions to facilitate proper healing. Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal.
Weeks 3–6: Patients will usually be seen for a follow-up appointment around this time. Dr. Ko can then track your progress and provide any updates if needed. You can return to work, but physical exercise should still be limited. Most swelling and bruising should fade.
Week 7 and Beyond: Patients can return to their complete routines.

When Can You See the Results?

The changes to your eyelids in upper blepharoplasty are immediate. However, patients can start to enjoy their results once the swelling and bruising have resolved. The initial amount of swelling usually fades within a couple of weeks, and patient results can then shine through. Patients can expect a more youthful appearance that still looks natural. However, residual swelling can take longer to fade, so final results are usually apparent only after a few months.

Maintaining your results will be a key part of enjoying the outcome of your procedure. We recommend minimizing excess sun exposure, avoiding smoking, and adhering to a healthy overall lifestyle.
