What Are Ectropion and Entropion?

Both ectropion and entropion are conditions that impact the eyelids. Each of these issues usually occurs related to aging, injury, or genetics. If left untreated, either condition can lead to symptoms that range from unpleasant to worrisome. Additionally, patients often are concerned about how the condition affects their appearance. Either one eye or both may be involved.

Entropion: Occurs when the eyelid turns in. Can result in eyelashes rubbing the outer layer of the eye, causing irritation and pain.
Ectropion: Occurs when the eyelid turns out rather than resting on the eye. Can result in dry eye and tearing problems.

Repairing either condition involves a surgery that lasts about 30 to 60 minutes. If only one eye is involved, then it is on the shorter end of the range. In most cases, patients only will need local anesthesia to remain comfortable. The surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you can return home (with someone else driving) that same day.

What Is the Recovery Like?

Recovery can depend on the complexity of your procedure, as severity of the condition can vary. However, most patients can expect about 1 week of initial healing. Mild swelling and bruising around the surgical site are normal during this time. However, managing them is straightforward, and they mostly fade by the end of the week. Some key things to remember during recovery include:
  • Avoiding strenuous activity
  • Avoiding irritating or damaging the surgical sites
  • Following all your post-procedure instructions
  • Attending your follow-up visits
  • Minimizing sunlight exposure
  • Avoiding drinking or smoking until fully healed

When Can You See the Results?

Ectropion and entropion repair both result in full repositioning of the eyelid upon completion. However, patients can expect the full benefits of their procedure to be noticeable once their swelling fades. Initial swelling fades in about a week, after which you should notice symptom improvement. Now that the eyelid is in a normal position, your eye should be more comfortable and no longer irritated. Your eyelid should remain in this new position. However, future damage or changes to the eyelid structures should be avoided to prevent experiencing the condition (or similar conditions) again.

Is Ectropion and Entropion Treatment Right for Me?

While some non-surgical treatments can provide temporary relief, they do not address the core issue. If you have symptoms caused by either ectropion or entropion, then the best solution may likely be surgical repair. The first step is to have a consultation with Dr. Ko. During this visit, he can go over your situation, including a comprehensive exam and a discussion of your symptoms.

Some symptoms that may be signs you need ectropion or entropion repair include:

  • Watery eyes
  • Red, irritated cornea
  • Sensation of something in the eye
  • Eyelash scratching the eye
